MentionOS vs Semrush: another toolkit for your team, or the Agent that runs AEO for you?

TL;DR

Semrush is one of the broadest marketing suites in the industry: SEO, advertising, content and competitive research under one login, with AI-visibility tracking now layered across it. The suite measures how brands appear in AI answers, scores the visibility, and hands your team the findings and recommendations. MentionOS answers a different question: what if nothing got handed to anyone. It is the operating Agent for AEO, an employee rather than an instrument panel, and the findings it produces become its own to-do list rather than yours.

The verdict

Semrush gives a marketing team an enormous instrument panel, with AI visibility now among its dials. MentionOS is the Agent that runs AEO for your brand: it reads its own dials, does the work the numbers call for, and asks your approval before anything consequential runs.

MentionOS vs Semrush: the full comparison

Credit where it is due

Semrush earned its place on the shortlist of serious marketing platforms. The breadth is real: keyword research, site audits, advertising intelligence, content tooling and competitive analysis in one place, and its AI-visibility layer is a proper build rather than a press release. It scores visibility across the major engines, tracks share of voice and sentiment against competitors, carries a prompt database with volume data, runs daily position tracking across AI surfaces, and its site audit now includes AI-specific checks. A team that already lives in Semrush gets AI-answer measurement woven through tools it knows. If the question is whether Semrush can tell you how visible your brand is in AI answers, the answer is yes.

The suite problem is the operator problem

Breadth has a price, and the price is you. Every module in a suite assumes someone qualified is driving it: choosing what to track, interpreting the score, turning the recommendation into a brief, chasing the work through whoever writes, builds and ships it, then reporting what happened. Multiply that across the dozens of modules a suite carries and the suite itself becomes a job. That is a reasonable trade for a marketing team or an agency. It is the design.

MentionOS inverts the arrangement: instead of you working the product, the product works for you. Take one thread as an example. The Agent's prompt research surfaces a buying question your customers have started asking AI engines, the kind of thing a suite would file under a rising trend for someone to notice. The Agent promotes it into tracking on its own judgement, discovers your product pages answer none of it, rewrites the descriptions and comparisons that should carry the answer, and sends you the proposal. You approve from your phone, the copy ships to your own store, and the daily brief tells you when the answers start naming you. Nobody logged into anything.

Its remit runs across the same ground a suite covers, held by one Agent instead of spread across modules: the questions worth tracking, the content worth writing, the product copy worth fixing, the technical conditions worth flagging, the brand knowledge everything draws on, and the reports that keep whoever needs to know informed.

There is also a difference in where each product's map is centred. Semrush grew around the search results page and now measures the AI layer above it. MentionOS was built the other way round: the AI answer is the starting point, because the buyer who asks ChatGPT which brand to trust never opens a results page. We wrote up why a strong Google position no longer guarantees presence in AI answers in why your Google rank means nothing to ChatGPT.

Delegation without the babysitting

Handing work to software raises the same worry as handing it to a new hire: what happens when you stop watching. MentionOS is designed so you can stop watching without losing control. By default it can read, investigate and propose; anything consequential waits for your yes, delivered wherever you happen to be, in the app, Slack, iMessage or email. Trust widens the way it does with a good employee: approve the same class of move enough times and the Agent may request narrow standing authority over it, which you can revoke in one action at any moment. Everything it does is journalled, from evidence to decision to outcome, and it holds itself to a blunt honesty rule: no claim of "sent" or "published" without the receipt to match. Decline a move once and it stays declined.

The measurement is wired in rather than bolted on. Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4 come connected for every customer, so a change in AI answers gets read against real queries, pages and sessions. When your stack has more to offer, APIs and MCP servers are possible to connect as scoped capabilities, including outreach campaign setup through connected tools such as Instantly, where the send button never leaves your hand.

Why choose us

Why choose MentionOS over Semrush

Zero seats

Nobody has to operate it

A suite is priced and designed around people using it. MentionOS works whether or not anyone logs in, and brings you the decisions instead of the homework.

One job

Depth instead of a dashboard for everything

Suites spread across the whole marketing stack. MentionOS points seven specialist functions at one question: does AI name your brand when your buyers ask.

Earned trust

Delegation that widens on evidence

It proposes before it acts, asks for standing authority only after you've approved the pattern, and keeps a journal of everything. Revoking is one action.

Wired in

Measurement you don't have to assemble

Search Console and Analytics come connected for every customer. What moved in AI answers gets checked against real queries and sessions, automatically.

Your channels

It comes to you, you never go to it

Proposals, briefs and questions arrive in Slack, iMessage, email or the app, and your reply lands back in the same conversation.

Questions

FAQs

Straight answers on MentionOS vs Semrush, no fine print.

Should I replace Semrush with MentionOS?

A team running a broad marketing programme has no reason to drop its suite. If that describes you, Semrush remains a serious suite for it. MentionOS exists for the job every suite hands back to you: running the AEO function itself, from reading the answers to shipping the work.

Doesn't Semrush already track AI visibility?

It does, and the measurement layer is a proper build: visibility scores, share of voice, sentiment and prompt data across the major engines. The difference is everything after the measurement. MentionOS reads its own findings, proposes the work, does it once approved, and shows the receipt.

Which AI engines does each product cover?

MentionOS reads ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI and Perplexity. Semrush covers Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on standard plans, with wider coverage in its enterprise tier. The products part company on what happens after the reading.

Is an AI Visibility Score enough to act on?

A score tells you where you stand; it cannot tell anyone what to write, which product page is the weak link, or whether last month's fix worked. Acting takes interpretation, prioritisation and execution, which is precisely the labour a suite leaves with your team and MentionOS takes on itself. Neither product, and no product anywhere, can guarantee what ChatGPT or Gemini will say; the honest offer is work that improves the odds, measured against what the answers do next.

MentionOS vs Ahrefs

Ahrefs is the benchmark SEO toolkit: backlinks, keywords, site audits, and now Brand Radar, its module for measuring brand mentions inside AI answers. Everything in it assumes an operator at the controls, someone who reads the data, decides what matters and does the work. MentionOS is the operating Agent for AEO. It maintains a live understanding of how your brand appears in AI answers, decides what deserves attention, does the work across content, product copy, site health and research, and brings you the decisions that genuinely need you.

MentionOS vs Searchable

On paper these two products overlap more than any pair in the category. Searchable tracks brand performance across eight AI engines, generates AI-optimised content, identifies schema and crawlability improvements, and describes an AI search agent that learns your brand. MentionOS tracks, writes, and flags technical issues too. The real comparison starts after the overlap: what happens once content is generated, what the word agent is held to mean, and who can prove what was done. MentionOS binds its agent to a governance system, with every move proposed before it runs, published to your own site on approval, and backed by a receipt you can audit.

MentionOS vs PromptWatch

PromptWatch assembles an impressive kit: prompt tracking across ten AI engines, citation analytics, real-time visibility of AI crawlers reading your pages, offsite mention tracking, and content agents that draft from citation data. Each part is useful. MentionOS is organised around a different idea: one Agent responsible for the whole AEO function, carrying its own context from the tracked question through the published fix to the measured result, and remembering what you taught it along the way. The comparison is between good parts and a connected whole.

MentionOS vs Profound

Profound and MentionOS sit on opposite sides of one question: who does the AEO work. Profound is an enterprise AI visibility intelligence platform. It measures how eight AI engines represent brands, sells conversation-volume data from consumer panels, and hands the findings to a marketing team that acts on them. MentionOS is the operating Agent for AEO. It maintains a live understanding of how your brand appears in AI answers, decides what deserves attention, does the work across content, product copy, site health and research, and brings you the decisions that genuinely need you.

MentionOS vs Peec

This is the closest comparison on this site, because both products were born in the AI-answer era and both take Answer Engine Optimisation seriously. Peec is AI search analytics for marketing teams: it tracks visibility, position and sentiment across AI engines, surfaces the sources answers lean on, and hands the team strategy recommendations. MentionOS is the operating Agent for AEO. Where Peec's output is a recommendation for your team, the Agent's output is the work itself, proposed to you, published on approval, and reported back with receipts.
